Is APEX-Maths a training camp for maths competitions, such as Olympiads?

It is not our goal to do so. Of course, participation in APEX-maths will give you advantages if you decide to participate in maths competitions, but our goal is to provide you with an immersive experience in the real life of high-level mathematicians, that goes well beyond increasing your capacity to solve Olympiads-type problems. Participation at APEX-maths will surely be an advantage if you apply to top universities.

What is the price?

Indicative price at your charge is 1500 euros for the entire APEX-Maths camp. This may slightly vary until final booking day. This is made possible by very generous sponsoring from the City of Reşiţa, Banca Comercială Română and Aqua Carpatica; the real cost of the event being in fact much higher, is generously covered by our sponsors. IMAR is responsible for the scientific aspects of the program, while InformArt is responsible for all the logistics, including payment details.

What is included in the price?

If you are selected the price includes: the maths courses, one night accommodation in Timişoara at the West University student house, bus transportation from Timişoara to Reşiţa and return (approx. 1h and 40 minutes travel time), accommodation for the entire period of APEX-Maths camp (newly refurbished rooms of 2 at the Reşiţa campus of the Babeş-Bolyai University), three meals a day, free bottled water, week-end tourist program, free internet access on the campus.

If I am very good but do not have the means to pay, is there support available?

APEX-maths is already significantly sponsored. We are trying our best to find extra financing. In short: if you are very good and do not have the means to pay, we will do our best to try and find some possibilities for you to attend, however at this time we cannot make a firm promise. Please indicate in your application this aspect and we will do our best.

What is NOT included in the price?

Things not included in the price: travel costs to and from your home location to Timişoara, accompanying person costs (travel, accommodation, subsistence, field trips etc. for accompanying person) and minor traveller costs, travel insurance, laundry costs, extra spendings.

Why Reşiţa?

From a variety of possibilities, we chose Reşiţa because the city of Reşiţa is mobilizing a strong educational initiative and therefore is supporting high-level educational events with international visibility. The city has a recently modernised university campus of the famous Babeş-Bolyai University and offers exceptionally beautiful natural surroundings for tourism and sports activities that students will enjoy during the touristic activities organised during the weekends.

Can the students be accompanied by the parents?

Yes. However, the students must be housed together with the entire group, since one of the goals of the APEX-Maths camp is to create a community of young mathematicians. The parents should make their own arrangements (we can suggest Travel Agencies which can assist you).

What documents are needed to enter Romania? Do I need a visa?

Visa is not required for most European countries, including EU citizens. EU citizens can travel to Romania with their valid ID card, other citizens might need a valid passport. Please check here if your country needs a visa for Romania: https://eviza.mae.ro/ShortStayVisa. In case your application to APEX-Math 2024 is approved by the Scientific Committee, the organisers will provide documents for you to obtain the visa.

In case I change my mind after I pay, is the money refundable?

We will select a group of 40 students and 10 students on the waiting list. If you pay and later you decide to cancel, your funds will be refundable only if one of the students on the waiting list takes your spot. In this case we will deduct 150 euro from your paid amount as our administration fee.

Can I contact my child at any time?

Yes. Mobile phones will be available anytime, except for the two hours of daily lectures. There will be an emergency number as well. At all times there will be at least two experienced staff with the group. Medical assistance is also available on the site, should there be an emergency.

Are there camp regulations?

Once the participation is confirmed, the participant/legal representative of the participant will receive a set of documents including the contracts, payment details, camp regulations, full detailed programme, participant personal file, GDPR agreement as well as suggestions for travel insurance etc. The camp will follow all the strict requirements of safety imposed by Romanian legislation. Transportation and tourist activities will be organised according to highest safety standards provided by Romanian legislation only by authorised entities.
