Location. Alba Iulia (Latin: Apulum in the Roman period, later Alba Iulia, Hungarian: Gyulafehérvár, German: Karlsburg or Weißenburg, Ottoman Turkish: Erdel Belgradı, english translation: White Castle) is the capital city of Alba County with a population of 66,400. In ancient times, the city of Apulum was the largest castrum in Roman Dacia and the seat of the XIII Gemina Legion. Alba Iulia is historically very important for Romanians, Hungarians and Transylvanian Saxons.
